Education + Prevention = A Safer Community
The most effective way to protect a community from fire danger is to prevent dangerous fires from occurring. Each year the Neshannock Township Volunteer Fire Company works diligently to spread the message of safety and fire prevention to our citizens. Through our various outreach programs we are able to provide valuable safety information to thousands of people annually. With audiences from preschoolers to pensioners, our programs are specifically tailored to the age and risk factors of the audience. Consistently carrying the message to the public helps to keep instances of fires and injuries low.
Programs for Children
Presenting fundamental fire safety concepts to children is the foundation of our program. Learning about the value of smoke alarms, getting away from danger, and calling 9-1-1 for help are the fundamental concepts that are taught at this age. As the children get older, the lesson plans include spotting potential danger in the home and asking an adult to help make the home safer. These basic, yet very important, tenets are presented in short, memorable lessons. Delivering safety education to children has an added benefit: children carry what they’ve learned home to parents and siblings. Brief, engaging lessons for children often yield safety discussions for the entire family. We use a variety of age-appropriate props and activities to capture the attention of young learners, including:
- Sparky the Fire Dog Robot
- The Hazard House Model Home
- Stop, Drop, and Roll Game
- Fire Safe Kids elementary school curriculum
Programs for Young Adults
As children grow into young adults, our targeted safety messages shift toward correcting dangerous situations and providing assistance during emergencies. Safe connections of electrical appliances, putting out a small grease fire on the stove, proper use of a fire extinguisher, and proper storage of flammables and poisonous chemicals are critical points taught to teenaged learners. Demonstrating the science behind fire behavior ties safety lessons into school curriculum and also helps to introduce public safety careers. At this age, we also introduce the importance of knowing how to perform CPR and basic first aid. Some instructional tools used for this age group include:
- Digital Fire Extinguisher Simulator
- Live Fire Extinguisher Prop
- The Hazard House Model Home
- Kitchen Fire Extinguishment Demonstrations
- Fire Station Tours
